Productivity is good for the soul

Happy Monday friends I hope that today finds you all rested and ready to conquer your week. Our weekend was extremely busy around the house, I think I have mentioned before that whoever said retirement was sitting around being lazy was seriously mistaken, we have never been so busy. So much so that we haven't even really done much exploring. With Betty's Bay having been enshrouded in fog since Friday evening, most of the time we haven't even been able to see the ocean much less the mountains, and half the family recovering from their colds we concentrated on indoor activities. On Saturday my clever Hubby started building another cupboard for our bedroom and I took the bull by the horns and started making the Roman Blinds for our kitchen. To those who know me will know that I am much happier knitting or doing crochet than I am sewing so this was a challenge which I am delighted to say turned out very well. Yesterday found the cupboard built and installed so now for the first time we have unpacked all our clothes and have no more boxes or bags in the house, I am so proud of this man of mine he is extremely talented, well done my Darling. From my side the blinds are all made and ready waiting to be hung (pics to follow) and are something else I can tick off my 'have done' list.

One of the great tourist attractions of the Western Cape is the wild flower displays up along the West Coast although I have never seen them we are having little glimpses of the floral 'shows' in our area. Up and down the slopes of the mountains and the fields the various types of Fynbos are blooming and one can see these large patches of yellow or white, it is absolutely gorgeous and as soon as I get an opportunity I intend to photograph them. We also plan on trying to go up the coast to see the actual displays which are so famous. There is a plethora of places to see and things to do down here, just two kilometers up the road is the Botanical Gardens which apart from their flowers and indigenous gardens have a couple of hikes that one can do, ranging from an easy stroll with a picnic basket to a hike for the more experienced with waterfalls and small swimming holes. We have Sand Boarding on the dunes, surfing, fishing, whale watching (we haven't seen any yet) and all manner of outdoor activities, art galleries, pottery shops as well as a few very individual Pubs and restaurants. On Saturday evening after a full day of being busy we opted for a Take Out dinner of Fish and Chips (what else), so after having phoned in the order I tootled off to collect. First of all the fog was so thick one could barely see 100 m and all around was this absolute silence, I walked into the restaurant and there they had THE hugest fire going in the fireplace it could not be more different after having come from Johannesburg but I wouldn't trade it for anything. God certainly knew better than us when it came to where we should be and every day we thank Him for His grace and goodness.

As for our animal family they are all behaving, there have been no more successful escapes by Houdini (Max), there is still a truce between the cats who as I type this are each sprawled out on the back of facing sofas fast asleep. Hubby dearest has escaped to his 'man cave' aka the garage and is doing some work and I should probably start organising dinner which tonight is going to be a 'Mom special' of Pasta Penne with Mince, mushrooms, cheese and loads of garlic and spice. I am attaching a few photos for you to enjoy that I took Friday afternoon on our walk at the beach. Have an awesome week folks, thank you for your support and always stay safe please.

An epic week.

WOW What a week this has been. Good day friends I can only hope your week has been a good one with no major 'speed bumps' to slow you down. My week has been 'epic' in so many ways, apart from the usual 'non stop busyness' that seems to define our retirement there have been quite a few stand out moments and memories. To start off with I was determined to bake and have success at making 'my' bread and rusks, so having learnt from last weeks fiasco and taking things slowly I very carefully measured and mixed the ingredients and let the Bread Machine do the rest and Voila ......... I had a perfect loaf of stone ground brown bread. Great joy and Hubby Dearest wasted no time in digging in. Then came the rusks, again I diligently weighed, measured and mixed and everything looked good except for the fact these don't need a bread machine it all on my shoulders haha. I put them in the oven and after a really long drying out time (I'm not sure why they took so long) we have a huge tin of rusks, again with Hubby wasting no time in testing them out. Success on two endeavours like that for me makes it an epic week, but to top it off August is also a major family birthday month with three of us all being within one week of each other. I have the honours of being first on the list and because of the move and all the things that have happened this year I had accepted the fact it would be a quiet birthday. I know that Poppet had tried so hard to organise a huge family get together and party as this was my 60th (shhhhhh), this proved to be well nigh impossible because of the move things kept changing until we could all see it was not going to happen. So quiet birthday it was and I have now decided officially that the number is, just that - a number, because I definitely don't feel 60, don't act 60 and don't like the number haha.
BigBear and BabyBear had suggested that we all have supper together and I was more than happy with that. I was so blessed with all the messages and calls that I received, it completely blew me away. We had a lovely quite day at home, I got to Skype with Poppet and Princess, had a lovely chat with Miss Muffet and our two grandsons in the UK, and then later went off to meet the family. Well what can I say except I have the most amazing kids in the universe, we arrived at this very fancy restaurant and there were BigBear and BabyBear at a table that was loaded with gifts and flowers and even a '60' candle burning on top of a brownie, what a total surprise. It turns out that they had all been scheming and planning on how to do this without everyone present. Each one had organised their gift with BabyBear who had co-ordinated the whole event, apart from not physically having the rest of the family with us it was as near to a perfect birthday as I have ever had. Big Guy according to his tradition had a beautiful bouquet of roses with the cutest little white Teddy Bear (yes I still love Teddy Bears/ fluffy animals and he most often gives them to me) there were so many gifts from them with one special gift from them all which is a beautiful antique decorative plate in blue and white, which I love, to always remind me of this special birthday. Again, thank you family for spoiling me beyond all expectation and making me feel so treasured and loved. As I said the following day, if this is what becoming more mature is all about, bring it on. Today is BabyBear's birthday and on Tuesday is BigBear's birthday, so you see what I mean that it is a major month of family birthdays.

We are, I think, settling down to life at the coast although we still pinch ourselves everyday at how good God has been in bringing us to this piece of paradise. Today there is not a cloud in the sky, there is no wind and the sea is the most gorgeous colour, it brings peace to my soul and calm to my mind. This week has also had it challenges as life tends to do. First Hubby and now Jelly Bean have both had really awful colds and coughs, so I have been dosing them up and it looks like they are now on the mend. Yesterday I had a major 'Fibro flare' which pretty much left me doing as little as possible and staying under my heating pad, it will take awhile to get through, but I am in the best place in the world to do that.

On the furry family front ........ It is never boring I can confidently say that. We have found out where Max aka Houdini was getting out and have closed that off now as well, he still patrols all the perimeter fences looking for gaps but so far with no further success. Yesterday Kiko got out and Hubby had to do some quick stalking to catch her, we were at a loss as to how she managed to get out until last night. We were sitting in the bedroom chatting and the next thing this little horror jumps from the toilet, across the laundry basket, over the hand basin, then takes a mighty leap up onto the glass shower door, walks along it until she can reach the shower head, from there to the window sil and Bob's your uncle out of the window. Their intelligence astounds me at times. Needless to say that the shower window is now not completely open and I am doing everything to discourage her from doing it again. This morning I was IN the shower and she did it so while she was carefully walking along the shower door I calmly flicked her with water until she decided she liked the water less than she wanted out of the window. Happily her and Gemma are now relatively peaceful together, not total peace, but they have accepted each other and even have some play time. Yippee that took awhile like a whole five months.

Folks I have rambled on long enough and my darling husband is starting to wonder where his lunch is. Here is wishing you and yours a wonderful weekend, have fun, make memories and always please stay safe.

My journey is easier with good planning

Greetings folks from a really cold Betty's Bay, I hope you all had a glorious weekend and are ready for whatever this new week brings? I know already this week is going to be a busy one and am garnering strength and energy to get through it. This weekend was also extremely busy and due to some insufficient planning (on my part) a tad frustrating haha.

Jelly Bean and I had everything planned on Friday evening before we went through to the airport to collect Hubby Dearest who was due to land just before 10 pm. We tootled off to the Mall to do some shopping and have dinner, this didn't go quite the way we planned seeing as we started off at the bank only to find out the bank card had expired. Happily the bank was still open and due to close in two minutes so we nipped in and were blown away by the service we received. They had no clients except for us and I was half expecting to be told to return the following day. Yet again the customer service here in the Western Cape is on the whole amazing. The lady who helped us made sure that she covered every possible angle and stayed until 6.15pm getting us sorted out with a smile. We were so blessed. Needless to say we had to rush the rest of the shopping before the stores closed but managed to get everything as planned and then stopped for a delicious seafood dinner which we took our time over. Eventually we left for the airport and arrived there at the same time as Hubby was supposed to be leaving Johannesburg giving us a two hour wait (we thought haha). More coffe' then messages from my darling Hubby to say their flight had been delayed, then delayed again ...... Yaaaay !!! So, people watching it was, we went and sat at the arrivals hall and for two and a half hours watched humanity bustle back and forth, it was actually a lovely time and an activity that can actually restore one's faith in humanity as you see families come together, couple reconnect etc. I will confess to the both of us having some really good laughs at either fashion bloopers or just general situations, all in all a fun evening with both of us getting more and more tired as time wore on, his plane only landed just after 11 pm and by the time we got home it was 12.20am.

Saturday found Hubby and I emptying out the entire garage and repacking it in order to 'sort it out' as well as make some much needed space, may I say this was NO small task but we accomplished exactly what we wanted and the bonus is we now know where everything is. So much for me saying it was going to be a weekend of indoor activities, being bundled up warm and baking hmmmmmm. Yesterday I had planned to get the Bread Machine out and make some delicious bread and then try out a new recipe for muesli rusks and this is where the lack of planning wrecked all my plans. I opened the flour packet which had a weavil nest, so no problem I used other flour and like a true South African 'made a plan'. I happily put everything into the machine and as the last ingredient was added the reality hit me, I was supposed to put the water in first and had added it LAST...... Being the optimist that I am, I let the machine carry on to the end of the programme. We had bread haha it was just a bit different - not all the ingredients got mixed in and it didn't rise properly, fail one in the baking department. Not to be daunted I moved onto the rusks and again a lack of planning stopped me in my tracks, I had not read the recipe closely enough and was just plain missing some of the basic ingredients so the rusks are on the to do list. It reminds me of a Scripture in Proverbs 24 v 3-4. Any enterprise is built by wise planning, becomes strong through common sense and profits wonderfully by keeping abreast of the facts. Something that I did not do yesterday. Eventually we just settled for the 'bundled up warm and stay inside' bit while the wind and rain raged around us, a very pleasant day ultimately.

In closing today's Blog and on a happy note, after nearly five months of my two cats barely tolerating each other, it would seem that we have turned a corner. Gemma has declared a truce and is actually allowing Kiko fairly close, even going as far as to play tag with her, although let it be said she is a sore loser because the moment Gemma sees that she is about to be caught there is much hissing and growling, these cats are a constant source of laughter and joy. Wishing you all an excellent week ahead and please as always stay safe. If you know of someone who is hurting or going through a difficult time can I ask you to reach out and encourage them? Whether it is through a phone call, an email or even a text message, just reach out and make someone's day better.

The days just fly by.

Good morning friends I hope this finds you winding up your week and looking forward to a great weekend. I am certainly glad that it is Friday because that means my precious Hubby is coming home tonight. Gee the house has been quiet without him although I think he has been so busy he has hardly had time to think. We have had two days where the wind has not blown at all and there is a heavy mist shrouding the mountains, so very peaceful and quiet. On Wednesday morning when we drove in to the airport and again on the way home there was a full moon which was shining over False Bay (we took the coast road), it was such a beautiful sight I just wish I could have captured it on my camera. We left home at 4 am and Jelly Bean and I drove back at 5.30am while it was still pitch black - it's a challenging road to drive as it runs right along the coast and is very twisty which doesn't leave a lot of opportunity to stop to take photos especially in the dark haha, I will get that photo some day.

Yesterday the two of us went on a bit of an exploration into Hermanus to get some groceries and kind of see what is there. It is the most gorgeous little town with little side roads filled with unique shops, including lots of bookshops which was right up our alley. Hermanus is one of those towns where you need a couple of hours, a comfortable pair of shoes and lots of patience to walk around. It is a tourist town so I find it can be quite expensive but bargains are everywhere. We also stocked up the pantry in the sense that I am going to attempt making rusks this weekend, here's holding thumbs - I will hopefully have positive feedback on the results.

One stand out event of the week is that our little Princess is going to be flying down for the October school holidays. This was not in the planning but she has really been battling since we left and after some discussion we all felt that the best solution was for her to come and spend the holidays rather than wait until December. So there is much excitement in the air and I am already thinking of ways to keep her occupied, collecting shells is high on the list. I am quite sure Grandpa will take her fishing, which they both enjoy, and walk the dogs which Houdini will enjoy. He has outdone himself this week with escapes and has been kept to the deck until Hubby gets back to remedy things. Our alarm company even put out a watch call for him after one escape #head in hands.

I have just seen the weather report which is forecasting that another cold front is about to hit us over the weekend and work its way up through the rest of South Africa. Sooooooo I think a weekend of baking, being bundled up in warm clothes and finding indoor activities is going to be on our menu. Wherever you are in South Africa stay warm, and everywhere else in the world stay warm or cool as your climate dictates, have a fantastic weekend and above all friends, please stay safe.

The sun is shining, the birds are singing.......

The sun is shining, the birds are singing, all sorts of 'nature noises' and the faint hummm of the ocean, that is what I am listening to as I sit and type today's Blog. Which is a far cry from the weekend's weather oh my goodness, this was a weekend to remember. We had BigBear and BabyBear come through for the weekend and as soon as they arrived the fun began. Houdini aka Max got out of the gate as they pulled up taking Sasha with him and together they took off at speed down the road. BigBear took off after them on foot, with Hubby going in a different direction with the car. It took a full 15 minutes before they arrived back almost simultaneously with only one of them bearing the two miscreants - BigBear, who had to run and dodge traffic trying to catch them. We are thinking of putting a GPS tracker on that darn dog haha. It was so good to see the family, to be able to spend some really good relaxing time with them and actually see THEM relax in the tranquility of Betty's Bay. On Saturday we went off in search of a small beach which is reported to have beautiful shells, it took awhile and some wrong turns but we found 'A'beach which was small and quite sheltered from the wind which had started in the morning. There were some lovely shells and rocks but I cannot say it was full of shells, nevertheless we had a wonderful time and came home with the beginnings of a collection. By Saturday evening (as predicted by the weather apps) the wind had risen to gale proportions accompanied by heavy rain. Dear friends when I say gale proportions I do mean GALE force winds up to approximately 90 kph - eeeek it made for an interesting evening as our house has a flat tin roof so the noise was magnified even more. We had a couple of leaks where it was raining so hard it was rainied in through the windows where they open and close. At times it sounded as if the roof might just go flying off, but happily everything stayed intact and there was no damage, not a lot of sleep was had I might add. Yesterday dawned cold, grey, wet and windy but no gales so all plans to go the beach were abandoned and we opted for a roaring fire and general laziness. I cannot wait for the rest of the family to be able to join us to unwind and recharge their batteries. I do so miss the rest of them enormously. Love you guys to the moon and back.

Today the sun is shining, hardly any clouds and as is usual with all Monday's a few challenges just to spice things up Max escaped AGAIN, we looked for him to no avail and he came home on his own, washing machine is having the Monday blues and we are doing the little odd jobs that still need to be seen to.

Can you believe it ? We have not even been retired for two weeks and on Wednesday (6am) my precious Hubby is flying off to Johannesburg until Friday evening for work. The day we moved in he received a call from a company that had seen his website and want some work done. He did a couple of examples for them that same evening and on Thursday they called and have given him the work. They are flying him up to get it going and from then on he should be able to do the rest long distance. Just once more we are seeing God's provision and His impeccable timing. Folks there are times in life when we cannot imagine how we will ever turn our situations around, change things or see a breakthrough but all I can say is, God promises us in His Word that "He will never leave us or forsake us," that if He can and "does provide for even the little birds He will surely provide for US." But, He also tells us that "we must not lose hope or grow weary in prayer and faith." We as believers are charged to pray "without ceasing and when we've done everything we know to do, then to continue to stand firm." Dear friends, God has each and every persons 'number' and He will change your situation, whatever it is, if you will continue to trust Him and use wisdom in your daily affairs.

As I can hear my temperamental washing machine beginning to sing a tune I am going to bid you all Ciao for now. I pray your week is peaceful, filled with blessings, good health, love and provision. I am positive my week will be anything but dull and look forward to our next 'catch up'. As always please stay safe and if you've had a rough day take a moment to B R E A T H E.

Whew is it Friday already ?

Where did this week go? Was it just me or has everyone had a week that just raced by? Happily our house is looking like a home and we are feeling very settled and peaceful. I think we've accomplished a huge amount in just one week as all that is still to be done is running the electrical wires permanently where they need to be, blinds to make for the kitchen and then the furniture that Hubby dearest is going to make. Bless his heart he spent just about the whole week 'Max proofing' the fence and was so delighted yesterday when he eventually finished. We were standing admiring his handiwork and lo and behold as I turned around all I saw was Max racing off across the yard next door. He had climbed under another part of the fence and was gone, needless to say we sprang into action - Hubby took off down the road calling and looking, I jumped into the car and followed suit. We covered a four block radius which is mostly Fynbos (an indigenous thick collection of plants) which cover most of this area and NOTHING, we even checked down at the beach. Feeling more than a little frustrated and irritated we slowly came back home thinking we would have to put up posters etc, when I saw two ladies standing on their stoop and stopped to ask if they had seen him, "Oh" said the one lady "he just ran up the road in that direction" pointing towards our house. When we got here Jelly Bean had managed to get him into the yard because her dog, Sasha, started barking as soon as he appeared. As a very good friend of mine would say "he is a real little s&@t". We put more rocks along the fence and he now patrols every side looking for a gap hmmm a total little horror. On a happier note it is such a blessing for me to see my two cats lying around the house all chilled and lazy, we still have some growling and hissing but not like it has been although this morning was an exception. The wind howled all night and at about 4am Gemma wanted to sleep between us but Kiko had beaten her to it, this resulted in Gemma walking over our heads and growling with much ado and ended up with them both being booted off the bed.

The other day we drove quite a long way to buy two Recliner chairs which were our anniversary presents to each other. We have been pricing and looking for weeks and eventually found a furniture wholesaler who had exactly what we wanted and then dropped the price even further. As my car is a hatch back which when you drop the seats makes a huge storage area we tootled off with great excitement. Bought and paid for the chairs which we expected to be in boxes, they were not, although the seat and the backrest do separate. We ended up having three sections of chair floor to roof in the back and the other backrest squashed between me and the window screen. I could only just see over it and was convinced the Traffic Police were going to pull us over which thankfully they didn't. It was one of the longest most uncomfortable trips I have done in a very long time - it seems like Hubby and I never do things in half measures haha. The result was worth it because we can now sit like Arthur and Martha in our recliner chairs.

As Big Guy would say "there is too much of excitement" at the moment because BigBear and BabyBear are on their way through to spend the weekend with us, it's the first time we will be seeing them due to schedule clashes, so the house is sparkling, the animals are polished and lined up in order (NOT!!!!) and supper is cooked. We've had wind, mist, rain, clouds and now sunshine just today but are in for a cold weekend apparently which is just what the Doctor ordered for some good family bonding time.

Speaking of family I would like to brag and congratulate my Little Princess on doing SO well in the Inter School Athletics yesterday. She came first in hurdles and second in relay and that with a twisted ankle and a sore knee. Well done my angel Granny is so very, very proud of you. Our little Olympian in the making. We miss you and Mommy and Uncle Big Guy so much but soon you will come and visit.

Well friends, I had better go make sure those animals are still standing to attention at the front gate, haha, and get the kettle on the gas. I wish you and yours the most amazing weekend. Enjoy whatever you are planning and always, always be safe please. There is so much more news which will have to wait for Monday's Blog.

Who says retirement is slow and boring?

Hi folks, I don't know who said retirement is slow and boring, because we haven't stopped. Good grief has it been busy. We have unpacked most of everything so the house is looking like home (sort of), we still need to hang pictures, sort out electrical cables, build a bedroom cupboard, a kitchen table, tea station ......... Should I go on? My dearest Hubby is trying valiantly to 'Max' proof the front fence but everyone who walks past stops to chat and introduce themselves so it is taking a little time haha. Today we thought we would go into town (35 km away) and get the wood for the cupboard, some hardware items we needed, two recliner chairs etc. Well....... It took the WHOLE day and we did not get the wood as it has to be cut and could not get the chairs as they are out of stock, joy of joys. We did however find a super little shopping centre in the next little town/village, Kleinmond, which has a fabulous grocery store and the most gorgeous haberdashery shop which I cannot wait to go back to. To top all of that off last night my iPad suddenly decided to give an error message and would not work, so I thought I would be typing this Blog on my phone but I Googled the problem, followed the steps to correct it and voila here I am, as Hubby says "Google knows everything".

Let me tell you about yesterday. Due to sore bodies (everywhere) I called a rest day although I still found a box to unpack #headinhands, I also 'nested' a bit and made some muffins and a proper cooked supper. When we woke up it was overcast and cold so we made our first fire and by lunch time it was raining, absolute bliss being curled up in the cold with the fire going and the rain on the roof. By 3.30pm the sun was shining so Hubby and I went down to the beach for a walk all wrapped up against the wind and had a bit of a drive around the area seeing what is where. That is the Cape for you all four seasons in one day - I love it. One of the things I enjoy the most is standing on the deck listening to the waves and all the birds and frogs (we think), it is so quiet apart from the noises of nature that one cannot help but relax and breathe it in.

The animals have all settled well if having yappy dogs can be called settled. For the first time in their lives they can see people walking past the house, or the wind blowing through the bushes so there has been a lot of yapping which we are having to stop. The cats are settled and look very lazy as they follow the sun around the room or drape themselves over the back of the furniture.

While we were driving today I just thanked God for His great love and mercy. There were so many times in the past when I did not know where the next meal or months rent was going to come from, He never once let us down, but never in my wildest dreams did I think I would EVER be where I am now. When times are tough and the days are dark and seem hopeless, it is hard to imagine anything different and if you do, very often the first thought is "that could never happen to me / I don't deserve that / God only does that for others". Friends God is always faithful and He asks that we stay faithful and strong and never give up believing. In the darkest days there will be blessings if you are prepared to look for and acknowledge them, in the midst of His blessings there will be challenges because that is life. Everyone of us has a story and that story is the sum of who we are and what we have been through, it is our testimony of God's love, His mercy, His grace and His favour.

As I close tonight I pray that whatever circumstances you find yourself in, God will meet you there and that you will be able to find Him in every situation, I pray that His peace will flood your soul and His healing power flow through your body. Have a wonderful week as you look for the rainbows and as always please stay safe.

We actually did it - we have arrived in the Cape.

Hello friends, this is just a quick catch up, it feels like such a long time since my last Blog and so much has happened in just one week. I hope this finds you all well and ready for the weekend. What a week we have had, jam packed with the long trip, preparation before the truck arrived and then actually moving into our lovely new home. Our trip down to Cape Town went well even though we did it over two days, I would like to add that on Sunday night we sleep in Colesburg and left early Monday morning with the weather at a 'toasty' 1 c. We arrived in Betty's Bay at about 4 pm, settled all the animals and then went through to friends who out us up until yesterday morning when our truck arrived. How is it that it takes weeks and months to pack and then you can unpack it in a day or two ? We worked until about 8 o'clock last night and then again all day today but it is now starting to look and smell like home (I cooked a nice lamb stew for supper hence the smell haha). We have been so very blessed in being able to buy this house and thank the Lord daily for His provision. There is still lots to do as we are very short of cupboards which my clever Hubby is going to build, a fence we have to 'Max proof' as he will find anyway out that he can, all the electrical wires for lamps etc to be done, and, and, and. I'm thinking we will be busy for quite awhile. one of my favourite things is being able to stand in the lounge and look at the ocean even though it's about 300m from the house. Can you believe we haven't had a moment yet to actually go down to the beach although the wind has been howling since we arrived so it hasn't been a priority? As for the animals, Max and Sasha are enjoying the bigger garden although for some reason they seem to think that the wind needs to be barked at...... I had a good laugh today when I happened to look outside and see Max getting up only to change the way he was standing in order to stop himself from being blown over, haha the trials of being a little Yorkie. All my hopes of Gemma calling a truce because it is neutral territory have fallen flat as there is no change whatsoever. She is still her growly, hissy self towards one and all. Kiko on the other hand has a 'thick skin' and takes no offense, she just explores her space and gets up to mischief quite happily and totally unperturbed by the goings on around her.

Well friends enough about our move, it's time I called it a day and make my way to bed. So much for pacing myself, that plan flew out the window and as I sit here (my precious Hubby has just made us a hot mug of Horlicks) my feet are so sore I cannot feel them, the rest of me feels about the same so I am going to have a HOT bath and hopefully and good sleep. As our Wi-Fi is now connected I will be back to normal and look forward to writing Monday's Blog.

I wish you all a wonderful, refreshing and hopefully relaxing weekend, whatever you do have fun and always be safe.
