HOME HINTS &TIPS

CLEANING WHITE TILE GROUT.   As you can guess I'm a bit finicky about my grouting on the deck and every now and then one of the dear doggies puddles there.  This naturally stains the grouting as well as leaving the smell.  I discovered that mixing a watery paste of Bicarbonate of Soda and white vinegar, pouring in into the affected grouting and then a quick run with an OLD toothbrush and it's back to white and no residual smell.

KEEPING GINGER.  I don't know how many kilos of ginger I've thrown out over the years.  Keep it out of the fridge or in the fridge and it shrivel up. Until now ..... just put the whole piece in a zip lock bag and keep it in the freezer.  Whenever you need some for whatever just grate the required amount and put the rest back in the freezer.  I use a small hand grater.  It doesn't lose its potency and stays perfect.

EYELET CURTAINS - if yours are anything like mine they tend to look very thin and insignificant when opened.  I saw this hack and it is amazing.  When you hang them put a empty toilet roll holder over the curtain rod every second pleat.  What a difference it makes.  We are now collecting empty toilet rolls 🤣

CLEANING HARD WATER MARKS & MILDEW. Make a paste of Amonia, Vinegar and Bicarbonate of Soda.  Apply to the affected area, leave for a few minutes then wipe off or use a scrubbing brush, then rinse with hot water.  Note : wear a mask.

SPORTS INJURIES / HOT FLUSHES /JUST HOT !!

Take a couple of cups of raw rice and place in a ziplock bag.  Keep it in the freezer and when needed put on the sore limb, or on the back of your neck to cool down.  The rice remains separate, thereby flexible.  THIS IS A WINNER !!!!!!

BURNS.
Take a cup or two of flour (yep plain old flour). Put it in the ziplock bag and keep in the freezer, and when you burn / scald your hand in the kitchen or wherever stick it into the ice cold flour.  This works like a charm and I've been using it for years.

LETTUCE LEAVES.
Apparently if you take the outer leaves of a lettuce and use them to wrap around a cut avacado, unused buns etc, out them back in the fridge and lettuce will keep your produce fresh.

RECIPE FOR NECTAR FOR SUGAR & SUNBIRDS
1 Litre of boiled water
1Cup of white sugar
Dissolve sugar in water then pour into a bottle which has a spout attached, hang outside and enjoy watching the birds drinking.

NATURAL WEED KILLER
I make up a solution of STRONG vinegar, boiling water and LOTS ofsalt which we used to kill some weeds that had the temerity to try growing on the deck. Happily my natural solution worked like a charm so off to Google to see if it was a legitimate method and I am happy to say it is. Although I did discover that if you are putting it on weeds growing in beds or lawn don't add the salt - it kills everything, which in the driveway's case is just what I want.

REMOVING MAKE-UP / FOUNDATION STAINS.

I cannot be the only one who has ruined tops or even linen by spilling foundation. GRRR.  The his happened last week on a brand new cloth I had embroidered.  I jumped up and grabbed the bottle of dishwash soap (a cheap brand), poured some on the stain and with a cloth underneath then rubbed it with a different cloth and hot water..... Voila stain gone completely.  I should think this only works on a fresh stain.

SHIRT COLLAR CREASED?
Take your flat iron and just run the collar, cuff, pocket through a couple of times and all spic and span.

RECIPE TO LOOSEN PHLEGM AND EASE A COUGH
This may sound gross but oh boy does it work.
Cut up one onion into slices and put it into a glass/ceramic container that you can cover.  Add enough sugar to cover the onion, cover and leave for a few hours.  The sugar draws the juice out of the onion and you drink one tablespoon of the juice every hour or two.  It works without fail and doesn't taste as quite as bad as you imagine.

DIRTY SHOWER DOORS
My constant fight with the hard water / soap marks on the glass shower doors and windows - purely by accident and desperation I discovered this.  Take the Mr. Muscle five  in one Floor and Tile Cleaner, spray it directly onto the glass and leave for awhile.  Go back and wet a brush or rough surface kitchen sponge
wipe evenly and then rinse.  Voila crystal clear glass.

WHEN YOUR COLOURS RUN IN THE WASH.
I Saw this yesterday so have not tried it as yet but it is wo the sharing.  When something, normally red, runs in the wash and you end up withe pink everything take the affected item and put it in a pot of boiling water together with one or two lemons sliced into rings, keep it on the boil until it is white again .  NB. That is IF the item can withstand boiling hot water.

SWEAT STAINS PLUS MOST STAINS.
My go to for most stains is Clean Green, it is a cleaning agent here in South Africa in hat I have used neat on fabrics from satin to remove sweat stains to car grease on denim.  It does not harm th fabric and if you squirt it on and leave for a little while then go back and rub the spot it generally comes out immediately.  Quite safe for the most delicate fabrics  I've found.

REMOVING BALL POINT INK FROM CLOTHING.
Generally it can be removed by using rubbing alcohol, hand sanitizer or even hair spray.  Place an OLD towel underneath the stain and then using a separate cloth (even a wet wipe) with the rubbing alcohol on it start blotting the stain using a fair amount of pressure.  This will cause the towel and the top cloth to absorb the ink, try not to rub until most of the ink is absorbed. You will need to keep moving the towel and refreshing your cloth .
If it's a roller ball pen ink you can soak the stain in milk, leave it for awhile then scrub lightly with an old toothbrush.
Any slight residue left behind can be remove with a very weak solution of bleach and then wash as normal.

DISINFECTING SURFACES.
Instead of buying expensive disinfectant to use on your surfaces at home try the following :
1 cap of bleach in 1 cup of warm water, use this to wipe down almost any colour fast surface. Or
Surgical spirits, put it into a spray bottle and spray your surfaces with it,  not necessary to wipe down after spraying

A CLEAN SMELLING BATHROOM.
I've just read this and not had time to try it, but will definitely give it a go.  Buy a tube of MENTHOL toothpaste, cut a few slices  into the tube (not big holes) pop it in your toilet cistern tank and everytime you flush it will release a clean menthol smell as well as disinfect.  It's recommended you replace every 2 to 3 months.

ANOTHER ORGANIC WEED KILLER.
4 litres vinegar
2 cups Epsom Salts
1/4 cup dish soap
Mix together and then spray on the problem areas.
