Time to Breathe Please

Greetings friends and family, gee I don't know if it's just me but the days seem to be flying past, just like that we are in the last week of January.  Well .... another busy week behind us and things are settling down just a little.

As I mentioned last week, we purchased a sofa but oh my goodness if I had know how much work and running around it was going to cause I might not have hehe.  Because it was absolutely, unbelievably dirty,  washing was the theme of the week, I felt like that was all I did but, it was worth it and I now have a sofa the same color as our others.  Even I was amazed that something so dirty could ever look clean, much less white again.  Along with all the washing we had a really strong wind blowing for most of the week which caused it's own special brand of 'fun'.   Not knowing how strong the wind was going to be I had started washing the base cover, which is a complicated piece of material, along with the seat cushion covers the night before, and therefore had no option but to hang them up.  Five minutes later Jelly Bean and I looked and both of the cushion covers had been ripped off the washing line, back out I went and put every peg on the line onto the base cover, bringing the other two inside.  A half an hour later the base cover was flapping all over the fynbos hanging on by one peg ....... good grief, anyway in it came and for most of the week we had our house adorned with a variety of couch covers and then regular washing.  Could I possibly have thought that was the end of it ?  Of course not !!!!  On Tuesday we had a trip into Cape Town to get some watch spares and most importantly met with BigBear for coffee and a good old catch up, which was well overdue, what a special time we all had - thank you son.  On our way into town we dropped off 2 of the cushion covers to be refilled and were told we had to first purchase some batting, we did this on the way home and dropped it off at the foam store and were then told we had to bring ALL the covers in as they insisted on inserting the foam themselves, which meant that I rushed home to wash the rest overnight and get them dry enough to go. My long suffering Hubby went back in on Wednesday expecting to wait for a couple of hours and bring them all home, only to be told the foam had not arrived but they would definitely be ready on Thursday.  BACK to town again on Thursday where he had to have car tyres fitted and balanced, do grocery shopping plus, plus.  He then went to visit a friend before collecting the cushions late in the afternoon.  The moment I heard his voice I knew there was a hiccup -  deep breath, they had done both seats but only one backrest cushion, they did not feel the foam was correct for the backs and asked us to try  and see how it fitted ........ it didn't.  I will admit by this time I was more than frazzled and I was not even  the one doing the driving back and forth.  They suggested we have inner bags made for the back rest cushions and then fill them with the usual filling which in effect meant another two to three trips into town, we live 45 Kms from town grrrrr.  I got onto my contact list and found a local lady who does reupholstery, called her and explained the problem, she is a gem, she came aound on Friday took a cover as a template and we will have the bags later today.  My goodness gracious what a palaver.  On Wednesday I have to go to town and will drop off the bags and get them filled which means we can finally enjoy our new couch.

After all that busyness we planned a very quiet weekend, I am really struggling to climb out of a very painful flare, so it has been extremely lazy.  On Saturday Hubby and I went to Pringle Bay to browse in a 2nd hand shop they have and seeing that they were having a Saturday morning market we took our time and enjoyed a leisurely coffee.  We also got into a long conversation with the owner of the restaurant about plants spekboom in particular, as well as a variety of other subjects before giving  me some slips of another succulent, I truly do love this piece of heaven we have been blessed to live in.

The family are all doing well and fully back into the swing of things - Big Guy is thoroughly enjoying his new job, the traveling  not so much hehe.  Poppet has been down with a tummy bug, but I trust she is now on the mend, Princess has already had her first athletic meet and is busy, busy, busy.  BigBear is well as is BabyBear, even though they had a 'speed bump'  workwise they are strong and moving forward.  Jelly Bean is doing well and Hubby has even been repairing watches in between all the traveling.   Currently as I type this  Zeepha has the zoomies and is very busy playing imaginary games all over the show, she is such a busy little kitty and not  a day goes by that she doesn't make us laugh at her antics, she is just precious beyond words.  Her latest 'thing' is sitting outside of Jelly Bean's door squeaking or, if I go outside or disappear she will sit calling me #facepalm.

Folks that's it for now, I am aiming for a good, sedate week and wish you all the same.  Remember to always try and make time to just stop and breathe, smell the roses or, for me just look at the sea and listen to the waves.  Ciao ciao for now, please stay safe .

Out and about in Pringle Bay, sheep and all.

Is it just me ??

Good morning all my faithful readers, friends and family, I hope you have a cup of tea or coffee because I am not sure where to even begin.  The next time I say that I am taking the week to rest don't hesitate to call me on it #facepalm, truly I am sure it cannot just be us whose lives are so crazy ?

Last week shortly after posting the Blog we had a little visitor in the form of a small Sugarbird, bless his dear if rather stupid heart.  He flew in and stayed inside for approximately four or five hours, getting stuck behind the blinds, flying into the ceiling, everywhere except the two open doorways (one is a triple folding door), I even closed all the curtains and blinds thinking he would see the open spaces clearer hmmmmm not a chance, never  mind that we were day one of an intense heatwave.  Eventually I felt so sorry for him that while watching him hanging on the light fitting I prayed under my breathe for God to show him the way out ..... well I hadn't even said amen and he looked at the door and flew straight out, THE quickest answer to prayer I have ever seen.  We then proceeded to close up the house, bring in the portable air conditioner which my dearest Hubby set up and plugged in (remember that point) and tried to find some semblance of comfort - an impossible challenge I can tell you.  Right up until Friday we fried our brains.  Now to back up a little, I did catch up on all my household chores and baking, did my nails etc so at least I  ticked off all my 'to do' boxes and the rest of the time we mostly read, it was really too hot to do anything else.

On Wednesday late afternoon I went into the caravan for something and as soon as I stepped in I smelt a really awful smell.  Hmmmm I looked all around and saw nothing, then my foot slid slightly and I looked down ................... there was this long line of 'muck'. Probably due to the fried brain cells I was a little slow in realizing what had happened, 30 seconds.  I opened the freezer of the fridge and OH DEAR ME the entire contents were as 'high'  as they could possibly be.  When Hubby plugged in the air conditioner on Monday somehow one of the wires of the plug for the fridge came loose and therefore was off for the full three days.  ðŸ˜±ðŸ¤¢.  It was with much gagging etc that I cleared it all out,  washed the fridge, freezer and the floor, it was so bad that we had to take the bag up to the dump immediately.  That was wednesday !!!!  There is still a faint pong and I have a sneaking suspicion we might have to lift one or two of the vinyl floor tiles - Hubby's job!!!

Friday dawned slightly cooler and with some light drizzle yaaaay, so for a change I went with my Hubby to do the grocery shopping and we nabbed a quick cup of coffee, by the time we got back I felt as if I hadn't rested in weeks.  Did the fun and games end there ?  Of course not why would they ??

When we moved down here we purchased two 'leather' recliner chairs which had sadly delaminated to the point that they were more curse than blessing and so for the last six months or so I have been looking online for a really long  2.5 m couch, preferably Coricraft as our other couches are from there.  I would either miss the good deals or they would be too expensive.  On Friday evening I saw an ad on FB and contacted the lady who said yes the sofa was available and we could collect it in the morning (so much for my planned lie in), there we were up bright and early , first stopping in the Strand to hire a trailer because the wind had picked up to gale force (everywhere in the Cape except in BB) and off we toddled.  Not the nicest area, and when we got there the couch was already wrapped in bubble wrap and waiting in the yard.  We looked and Hubby sat and declared it comfortable and so it was loaded onto the trailer and back we came.  We had driven 5 Kim's Hn we had to stop and take off the cushions because the wind had torn the bubble wrap to shreds.  By the time we got off the highway into Gordon's Bay Hubby looked and saw that the actual base cover was being lifted off, so another stop and we stripped that off and put it in the boot. From there we proceeded without further incident except the buffeting of the car and trailer.  Arrived home and it started to rain slightly so no time to sit and garner strength.  We immediately dis-assembled the recliners and moved them to the garage (flipping heavy).  Then ............. to get this massive couch off the trailer and into the house.  Hubby backed the trailer right up to the edge of the deck, Jelly Bean came to help and we started lifting, you can't drag it or the legs will break.  I could go into major detail but suffice to say that even using the lifter 'goodeymagaftie' which has wheels, it took a lot of sweat, manouvering, frustration and a long time for the three of us to get it into the house.  It was way dirtier than I had imagined so all covers came off immediately and I vacuumed and cleaned the base and cushions before covering it all with a throw.  Note to self, next time find extra hands and strength.  Whatever strength and energy I had built up just flew out the window, I pulled a couple of muscley things and am not a very happy camper at the moment.  The good news is I advertised the recliners yesterday and within two hours they were gone and paid for.

From Saturday evening we went from heatwave to freezing cold and are still in the cold portion  - YAAAY.  We have had 49 mm of rain in 24 hours Praise the Lord.  But honestly who goes from sleeping with fans on and minimal clothes to winter pyjamas and freezing, you have got to love the Cape.  After putting the base cover and one cushion cover in the washing machine yesterday (I had a cleaning plan worked out) just now I tried to hang it on the line HAHAHA. I used every peg, wrestled with what felt like an out of control octopus on steroids, came inside and five minutes later it was flying in the wind. 🙄  The base cover  now draped all over the dining room BUT apart from two marks I got ALL  the dirt out and trust me it was BAD.

Well folks, your coffee is probably cold and I am needing heat and painkillers, so that's me for this week.  I appreciate you all and please stay safe.  Ciao ciao.

Fun and games.

Good morning everyone from an extremely quiet Betty's Bay.  As we head into this week our lovely little village is settling back into its normal rhythm after the influx of visitors, and we are adjusting back into normal life.  Having been  with us for a wonderful six weeks our Princess flew home on Saturday narrowly escaping the hottest days of summer so far.  To be honest the weather through the holiday period was really nice for locals but not quite what most holiday makers wanted.  When it wasn't blowing up a storm it was cool and sometimes even rainy which is most unusual compared to the last few years.   Despite all that Princess managed to acquire a gorgeous tan, watching her tan is an experience ....... she does fifteen minutes left, right, front and back, then that's it, one extremely disciplined young lady.  It was such a blessing to have her with us, she is incredible company, loved and cuddled the cats to distraction, and helped with anything and everything, we miss you angel.  Apart from getting Grandpa to take her bodyboarding as many days as possible, they also did their 'annual' paddle on the Kleinmond lagoon. On Thursday the two of us went to a little beach where we collect shells every year, gee it was hot !!!  We had great fun and came home with a nice little 'haul', it was only later that day when I saw my memory on Facebook that we had done the exact thing two years ago to the day hehe, we then took our hot selves off for a cold drink before coming home to a cool shower.

We also managed a trip into Hermanus which was quite literally, get into town, do what we had to and get out as soon as possible - too hot, no wind and too many people.  Our little Max is still on his medication and it looks like he is going to be on them permanently as he still looks like he swallowed a rugby ball.  Apart from the shape he seems to be his usual happy self, just aging quite quickly now.  The rest of the zoo ...... oh where do I even start?  We are currently trying to put Bravecto onto Jasper (Zeepha is done and dusted) with th J cat this turns into a life threatening operation.  I am convinced that he senses the box come into the house, we have tried twice and met with him fleeing and the second time deep growls and being pushed away #thestruggleisreal .  Zeepha is now quite happy to go outside on a lead and harness, until we build them a catio, but yesterday we had a sugarbird  fly into the house at 8 am and nothing we did was going to move him.  Eventually we closed all curtains leaving only the big doors open and the 'front' door, still nothing and she was so mesmerized that she barely moved.  At lunch time I looked up and prayed quietly for God to show him out and I wasn't even finished saying amen when he looked at the door and flew straight out, that was the quickest answer to prayer I've ever had.

The best news this week was after quite a few delays Big Guy got his contract and starts working tomorrow, thank You Father God.  It is his birthday tomorrow, Happy Birthday son and wishing you MANY more happy, healthy years ahead.  BabyBear flew back to Johannesburg yesterday and that means everyone is back at work, with Princess back at school on  wednesday all is back to normal and the new year is officially underway.

Saturday marked the one year anniversary of the fire storm that ravaged our village last year, the recovery we have seen has been remarkable both with homes being rebuilt and with the vegetation recovering much quicker than expected.

Folks that's my news for now, this week I intend catching up on a couple of domestic chores and then plenty of rest, my body has demanded some time out.  I pray you all have a wonderful week, that things will settle into a normal rhythm quickly and easily.  Please be safe and aware of your surroundings wherever you are.  With love from Betty's Bay ciao ciao.

Adventures in 2020

Good morning all at the start of a new week, new year and new decade.  I hope you all had a good New Year and are all ready to tackle what lies ahead.  We had what felt like a very quiet week which, in retrospect was actually very busy.  For the first time in many years we actually stayed up, more like propped our eyelids open, until midnight as it was Princess's first new year, then after wishing each other we promptly all went to bed hahaha.  On the 1st we went for a long walk on Silversands Beach, walking much further than I thought and, even though it was sunny there was a brisk cool wind blowing off the sea, which kind of disguises the fact that one is getting sunburnt - 'some' delicate flowers came home rather red hehe.
Later in the week on the pretext of going to the local shop Poppet took me for a delicious cup of coffee at Coffee on Clarence, one of our local famous little coffee shops - it is always a treat to go there and we came home laden with cakes for everyone else #bestcakesever.
The week truly seemed to go by in a flash and yet last a long time, anyone ever have those kind of weeks ?
As Poppet flew back very early yesterday morning we planned a mini road trip to Cape Aghullus, somewhere I have wanted to re-visit since we've been here.  On Friday evening I prepared a picnic lunch and bright and early on Saturday morning we loaded up and set off.
It actually took about two hours to get there with a stop for refreshments and oh my word, it was SO hot - I definitely function better in the colder weather hehe.  We went to the Lighthouse and while Poppet and Princess braved the 'ladder' type stairs to get to the top, the three of us walked around (Jelly Bean wasn't feeling 100%) and I took loads of pictures. I don't often get to the experiment with my camera, but mastered the video setting plus one or two others.  From there we drove to the rocks which is the official place that the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet, where a plinth type structure has been built with information about the area and a line drawn with Indian / Atlantic written on.  To my surprise the people simply queue up waiting to take their pictures there, right at the very tip of our Continent.  When our turn came I took pics of the girls and then Poppet had Hubby and I stand for a pic, insisting that we kiss - on the line, this brought a round of applause from the rest of the queue, just a tad embarrassing for someone who doesn't enjoy being in the spotlight, thanks Precious :D
After all this we enjoyed  our picnic right there on the rocks and were intending to head to Anniston to see the cave at low tide.  At that point I just could not face the extra car time and we ended up stopping at the Struisbay Harbour - what a beautiful spot - where we went to a beach restaurant and sat for an hour or so cooling off with some ice cold beverages, more pics taken.  I get extremely frustrated when my body pulls the plug on me especially when it comes to disappointing others, sorry Princess and Poppet,  there will be a next time.  On the way home Hubby stopped in Bredasdorp and bought the freshest fish and chips to take home for supper, they were delicious but such big servings only one person was able to finish #eyeslookingatHubby

Yesterday Poppet left at 6 am with Hubby taking her to the airport, I accomplished not one single thing and spent the day resting on my heating pad.  Now we are in our last week with Princess, it is already super quiet without Poppet and after Princess flies home on Sunday the house is going to feel very empty, so we intend making the most of the next few days with her.

I would like to encourage each and every one of you to go into this new week with a positive attitude and knowing that God has each of us in the palm of His Hand, there are no surprises for our Heavenly Father as we read in Jeremiah 29 v 11. "For I know the thoughts that I think towards you," says the Lord, "thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future."  May 2020 be a year of blessing, peace, good health and new beginnings for each one of us.  Stay safe out there folks.
